Thoughts of the Mediterranean bring postcard-worthy images of gorgeous blue ocean waters, white sane beaches, cloudless blue skies…and food? Yes, food! Gormish Chiropractic & Rehabilitation presents nutrition tips, and the Mediterranean diet is bantered around the world of nutrition for its multiple health advantages as well it should in our chiropractic world, too. Fish, fruits, and veggies are healthy for all of us in this Carrolltown chiropractic family!

BENEFITS OF MEDITERRANEAN DIET

With the expanding recognition that diet offers a beneficial role in health and prevention of disease issues like osteoporosis, bone loss, etc., guidelines are being established. A new paper with suggestions for guidelines recommended a mediterranean-type diet with daily consumption of 2 to 3 dairy products to deliver calcium and protein adequate enough to maintain normal calcium-phosphorous balance and bone metabolism all of which are related to a reduced risk of fracture. (1) In other papers, the Mediterranean diet has been described as reducing hip fracture risk. Another recent paper explains that there is evidence that a modified or alternative Mediterranean diet like the DASH (“Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension”) diet may also decrease hip fracture risk in addition to threat of lumbar spine osteoporosis in females. (2) A study just released this past month showed that older adults who followed the Meditterranean Diet closely had lower chances of developing cognitive decline. (3) Better BMD, lower osteoporosis odds, lower risk of cognitive decline and hip fracture may be inspiring to try and follow the Mediterranean diet, yes? Gormish Chiropractic & Rehabilitation finds these new studies quite interesting to share with our Carrolltown chiropractic patients and their families.

WHAT DO I EAT ON THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET?

What foods are in the mediterranean diet? Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, healthy fats (olive oil, nuts, seeds), yogurt, seafood/fish, a little red wine, and lots of water, un-sugared sparkling water, juices. It proposes staying away from sugars, refined grains, ultra-processed foods, etc. (4) These are all possible if not simple!
