Carrolltown Chiropractic Nutrition Plan for Osteoporosis & Osteoarthritis

August 20, 2019

Nutrition. Good nutrition is a good foundation for a healthy body. In this Carrolltown chiropractic practice, we see conditions like osteoporosis and osteoarthritis that develop over time. Their potential prevention and treatment are foundationally embedded in early-life nutrition habits that are maintained and/or improved upon throughout life. Gormish Chiropractic & Rehabilitation describes new research on the importance of vitamins A, C and D along with glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate for bones and joints and overall health.

HEALTHY CELLS, CARTILAGE, & BONE PREVENT DISEASES LIKE OSTEOPOROSIS & OSTEOARTHRITIS

Optimal nutrition status protects the body and keeps it strong and healthy. Research has demonstrated the benefits of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate in slowing osteoarthritis of the knee. Researchers now want to study how nutrients, vitamins, antioxidants and other natural components in a normal diet may be beneficial. (1) Optimal bone and cartilage metabolism wards off issues like osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) regulates bone and cartilage metabolism at the cellular level – even into the nucleus of the cell – of osteoblasts and chondrocytes. (2) The metabolism of articular cartilage relies on chondroprotectors (CPs) that contribute to the regeneration of cartilage surfaces and joint capsules. In osteoarthritis and low back pain, loss of chondroitin sulfate and hyaline cartilage is noted. Some approaches to remedy this situation involved injections of CPs. (3) Other approaches incorporated oral supplementation as diet is not often a source of these CPs. Oral supplementation is also a preferred way to improve vitamin D levels as low levels of vitamin D are understood to be contributors  to conditions like osteoporosis, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, some cancer types, and overweight/obese status. Vitamin D is essential, but its natural sources like fatty fish and eggs are not usually part of most people’s day-to-day diets. In Spain, at least 50% of the population is lacking vitamin D. Researchers recommended that Spain find a way to encourage people to eat eggs to combat the vitamin D deficiency and ward off future diseases. (4) It’s especially important for those who have a combination of issues - osteoporosis, vitamin D deficiency and high fracture/fall risk – to keep up their supplementation of vitamin D. (5) Feeding yourself goes so much further than feeding your stomach and pleasing your cravings! The food you eat and the supplements you ingest keep your body working, healthy and strong.
