Could a Plant Compound Help Protect Your Intervertebral Discs?

July 29, 2026

If you've ever coped with disc-related back or neck pain, you know how much your spinal discs count to your daily comfort and mobility. Now, exciting new research is investigating a plant-based compound called quercetin — found in foods like apples, onions, and berries — and its potential to delay disc degeneration at the cellular level.

WHAT IS QUERCETIN?

Quercetin is a plant pigment known as a flavonoid. It's already recognized for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, but two studies published in 2026 dove further into how it may particularly support the health of your spinal discs.

WHAT THE RESEARCH FOUND

The first study, published in Tissue & Cell, found that quercetin helps protect nucleus pulposus cells — the shock-absorbing cells at the center of each spinal disc that act as your body's natural shock absorbers. (1) Researchers found that quercetin works by calming down a specific inflammation pathway and strengthening a cellular "clean-up" process called mitochondrial autophagy. Put simply, this supports disc cells in getting rid of worn-out components and functioning more efficiently, which may help postpone the degeneration activity.

The second study, published in the Naunyn-Schmiedeberg's Archives of Pharmacology, took a distinct view. (2) Using advanced genetic analysis, researchers identified that fibrosis — a kind of scarring — in nucleus pulposus cells plays a critical part in disc degeneration. They found that quercetin demonstrates potential as an fibrosis-fighting agent, meaning it may help stop this scarring process from advancing.

WHY THIS MATTERS TO OUR PATIENTS

While more research is necessary before quercetin becomes a standard part of disc care, these findings add to a expanding body of evidence that nutrition and natural compounds can have a supportive role alongside gentle, non-surgical spinal care like chiropractic treatment. At Gormish Chiropractic & Rehabilitation, we believe in a holistic approach to spinal health — combining hands-on chiropractic care with lifestyle factors that support your body's innate healing.
