Carrolltown Strong Bones, Fewer Falls Vitamin D Plays a Bigger Role Than You Think

VITAMIN D IS GOOD FOR US ALL, ESPECIALLY US OLDER FOLKS!

When your chiropractor talks about vitamin D, it's not just chatter — it's because this one nutrient gently influences so much of what keeps you moving well and feeling good. This sunshine vitamin is quietly doing essential work in our bodies — and two newly published research papers remind us just how much it counts, especially as we get older. At Gormish Chiropractic & Rehabilitation, we love sharing research like this with our patients in Carrolltown — read on to see what the latest science reveals about vitamin D and your health and how adding it to the chiropractic treatment plan may benefit you!

WHAT THE LATEST RESEARCH IS TELLING US

A major systematic review and meta-analysis released in The BMJ: British Medical Journal in May 2026 analyzed 69 clinical trials involving nearly 154,000 participants to calculate calcium and vitamin D supplementation for fracture and fall prevention. Researchers found that calcium and vitamin D used in combination was associated with a somewhat lowered fracture risk — a meaningful finding for anyone who has watched a parent or grandparent struggle after a fall. No single supplement tells the whole story of good health, but when research at this scale points in a consistent direction, it's worth paying attention. (1)

The second paper, published in Frontiers in Endocrinology in April 2026, zoomed out to look at the bigger picture — exploring what vitamin D means for our health across the full sweep of getting older. Vitamin D supplementation, especially blended with physical exercise, is associated with improvements in muscle strength and postural balance in osteoporotic patients, and a reduced risk of falling. That's a big deal! And when it comes to staying upright and independent as we age, strong muscles and steady balance may be the most valuable protection we have. (2)

MORE THAN JUST BONES — VITAMIN D'S REACH SURPRISES US

The research also confirms that approximately 60% of elderly individuals are vitamin D-deficient, and that low vitamin D status is associated with musculoskeletal disease, cognitive decline, cardiovascular problems, and even all-cause mortality. In other words, this isn't just a bone issue — it touches nearly every system in our bodies as we age. (2)

YOUR SPINE, YOUR NUTRITION, YOUR CARE PLAN — ALL CONNECTED

Here at Gormish Chiropractic & Rehabilitation, we care about the whole you — not just the joint or disc that brought you in the door. Cox® Technic, the gentle, non-force spinal manipulation we use to alleviate back pain from disc and non-disc conditions, works brilliantly alongside good nutrition. Healthy vitamin D levels support the muscles and bones that border your spine, which means your treatments may feel better and hold longer when your body has the building blocks it desires.
