Carrolltown PPI Use and Hip Fracture Risk

July 27, 2021

Hip fracture and GERD. We often comment that everything in the body is linked. Here is another scenario. GERD or reflux symptoms drive sufferers to seek relief. Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) come to the rescue for many Carrolltown reflux sufferers. Unfortunately, these PPIs may trigger issues elsewhere, especially the hip for which the risk of fracture is higher, even though they help with GERD. Your Carrolltown chiropractor closely monitors our patients who report hip pain, especially if they are using PPIs, as many time chiropractic treatment does ease hip pain.

PPIs, GERD, and HIP FRACTURE RISK

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are commonly recommended and used for GERD and peptic ulcer management. The risk of hip fracture is elevated for PPI users. Whether users utilize a low or medium dose, the risk of hip fracture is higher while those on a high dose were at even higher risk for hip fracture. Researchers caution that doctors and patients must know this in order to be cautious in prescribing PPI use long term and be cautious in knowing what the proper usage of PPIs is so that they do not take it without a clear indication for such use. (1) Researchers in a recent study of the effect of proton pump inhibitor use on hip fracture risk minced no words: PPI use is associated with hip fracture development. They begin their study by acknowledging that the effect of PPI use on the risk of hip fracture is contestable which set them on a course to see for themselves. They found participants who were over age 40 and had been prescribed PPIs for at least 90 days. They then checked on any hospitalizations in these patients for hip fracture. They found that fractures developed oftentimes in PPI users than in those who didn't use PPI and that fracture risk associated with PPI use rose with duration of use. (2) Averting hip pain is certainly preferable, and chiropractic treatment may be gentle and relieving for many.

CHIROPRACTIC TREATMENT OF HIP PAIN

Chiropractic care of the hip and hip pain can be relieving for hip pain sufferers.
